To understand the various die progressions of the 1817 N12 large cent, this methodology, derrived from polynomial expression mathematics, attempts to characterize the various (and numerous) die breaks on this facinating large cent. Once completed, this encoding scheme can be used to show the unique die break states of the coin, in the same way grading is used to describe the overall condition of the coin.
