A Study of the 1817 Newcomb 12
Large Cent (yes, we're under
construction)
The 1817 N12 large cent
exhibits a wide variety of states as the various breaks progress from
early to terminal. Studying almost 200 instances of the N12, a
lot of the die states seem to cluster in the middle, while early and
terminal die states are very sparse. It seems that using the
typical early, middle, late, and terminal die states is somewhat out of
place for the N12, so I've developed a related, but different scale to
describe the die states. In particular, the addition of a very
early die state adds the view of the earliest know die-state instances
of the 1817 N12.
